Dobis launches lightweight shopping bags made with Mondi recycled paper

Dobis is converting a range of Mondi papers containing recycled fibres into paper bags for fashion, fast food and retail products; a move it claims reduces packaging weight and reduces material consumption while maintaining strength and print quality.

Dobis uses a variety of Mondi papers in its converting operations. Eco/Vantage Kraft Pro meets the needs of fast food and grocery applications and has ISEGA food approval and 20% recycled content; Eco/Vantage Light Fashion is made from 100% recycled fibres and claims to be suitable for fashion and gift bag applications; Eco/Vantage Kraft Classic is also suitable for food and fashion packaging, combining 50% recycled content and design for strength and printability.

To do this, the company has switched to a lighter paper. This reportedly does not compromise the strength and print quality required for premium shopping bags, and is claimed to improve printing results with reduced material consumption and less ink. Each is expected to benefit Dobis' sustainability goals.

"For the past three years, Dobis has relied on Mondi's broad portfolio of papers, from 100% fresh fiber to papers with recycled content, and the partnership helped us conduct extensive research to test and select the ideal papers for different applications so that Dobis can meet their high quality and efficiency standards," said Gerhard Pachler, Regional Sales Director Specialty Kraft Papers at Mondi.

"With Mondi, Dobis is breaking new ground in sustainable paper bags," explained Arkadiusz Starzyński, Sales Director at Dobis. "By using Mondi's Eco/Vantage papers and water-based inks, Dobis has achieved high production speeds while reducing ink consumption and costs. In addition, by optimizing paper quality, we have minimized glue consumption during folding and gluing, thereby achieving our sustainability goals."

Previously, Welton, Bibby & Baron converted Mondi's functional barrier papers, described as the "thinnest paper" and made from responsibly sourced fibers, into premium bags for pre-packaging fresh bread products. The bags are designed to be recycled at the end of their use.

Iceland Foods recently sought to reduce its own raw material consumption by 40% with a reusable and recyclable shopping bag made from Paptic wood fiber material. The bag is designed to carry heavy, wet and frozen items, and can be folded, stored and reused multiple times without sacrificing functionality.

In addition, Releaf Paper was nominated for the 2023 Sustainability Awards for its recyclable and biodegradable shopping bag made from fallen leaves. Since then, Uber Eats has begun using its bags to provide eco-designed food delivery packaging to Parisian restaurants through its Green Packaging Marketplace.
