Ahlstrom launches fiber-based paper-based tape to reduce plastic use

In an effort to reduce plastic waste and environmental impact, Ahlstrom has launched MasterTape Cristal, a transparent paper-based tape made from renewable materials. Ahlstrom says the tape can be widely used for gift wrapping, packaging and office purposes, with similar strength and transparency to traditional plastic tapes, ensuring quality is not compromised. Apparently, the solution is also recyclable and suitable for composting.

Laurent Lebrette, Head of R&D for Ahlstrom's Tapes business, commented: "MasterTape Cristal is the result of close collaboration with different stakeholders, including customers and suppliers. The company has already received enthusiastic feedback from early adopters, including schools, offices, retailers and households, who appreciate its environmental benefits without sacrificing performance."

Sebastien Ferrari, Product Manager for Ahlstrom's Tapes business, added: "We have developed a breakthrough product that enables the transition from plastic to paper, which was not possible with transparent materials before. MasterTape Cristal is a great example of the solutions we have developed in collaboration with our customers to help them meet the challenge of reducing their overall climate impact and, more specifically, Scope 3 emissions."

Back in January, the company unveiled the fiber lid for its single-cup coffee capsules, which is said to be compostable in both domestic and industrial conditions and is designed to replace plastic and aluminum alternatives. The patented structure is compatible with the most common bio-based capsules currently on the market.
